Half-Hanniken
The Virginia Reel
Bonnets So Blue
The Duke of Kent’s Waltz

Half-Hanniken

For a circle of couples, as many as wish to dance, all holding hands facing the center.

4 counts    Take four steps into the center of the circle (Double Up)

4 counts    Back up four steps to return to place (Double Back)

8 counts    Repeat the double up-double back figure

When you return to your place, drop hands and face your partner.

8 counts    Take both hands with your partner, and double up to meet right shoulders with them, then back to your place (Side Right)

8 counts    Keep holding both hands with your partner, and double up to meet left shoulders with them, then back to your place (Side Left)

Now, keep just your right hands together.

8 counts    Circle all the way around your partner, holding right hands, until you return to your spot (Arms Right)

8 counts    Switch hands, and holding left hands, circle 1 ½ times around your partner to the left, ending up in your partner’s place (Arms Left)

Everyone face the center of the circle and all take hands. You should have a new partner, and the whole dance repeats again from the doubles.

At the end of the dance, bow to your partner.

The Virginia Reel

For a line of couples, longways, facing your partner.

Begin by bowing to your partner (Honor your partner)

4 counts    The partner on the right at the very top of the set (traditionally a lady) and the partner on the left at the very bottom of the set (traditionally a man), take four steps towards each other (First corners Double Up)

4 counts    Back up four steps to return to place (Double Back)

8 counts    First corners take both hands and turn all the way around (Two Hands Around)

4 counts    The partner on the left at the very top of the set (traditionally a man) and the partner on the left at the very bottom of the set (traditionally a lady), take four steps towards each other (Second corners Double Up)

4 counts    Second corners double back

8 counts    Second corners take both hands and turn all the way around

8 counts    All couples face their partners, take right arms and turn all the way around, returning to your spot (Arms Right)

8 counts    Repeat, taking left arms and turn all the way around, returning to your spot (Arms Left)

8 counts    Two hands around with your partner

8 counts    Go back-to-back with your partner (Do-si-Do)

Now, everyone take inside hands with their partner and face up the dance (towards the music). This next figure doesn’t necessarily have a set number of count, but you’ll be able to feel it in the music.

Following the first couple, cast off to the bottom of the set. The top couple will split and dance down the sides of the set to the bottom, with everyone else following. (Cast off)

When you get to the bottom of the set, take both hands with your partner and chassez back to your original spot.

Raise your arms up like London bridge so the first couple can go under the bridges to move to the bottom of the set, while everyone else scoots up one spot. Now there is a new top couple.

Repeat the dance with everyone in the new positions.

At the end of the dance, honor your partner.

Bonnets So Blue

For a line of couples, longways, in sets of two couples facing each other.

8 counts    Each group of four take hands and circle completely around the set to the left (Circle Left)

8 counts    Circle back to the right, returning to your original spot (Circle Right)

8 counts    First couple face down towards the second couple, take inside hands and lead down just past the second couple. Once they have just passed the second couple, turn single by themselves, ending facing up the set.

8 counts    First couple take inside hands and lead back up to their original spot, then cast down the outside into second couple’s place.  Second couple lead up into first couple’s place.

Everyone face their partner.

8 counts    Go back-to-back with your partner (Do-si-Do)

8 counts    Take both hands with your partner and turn all the way around (Two Hands Around)

Repeat as the music continues.

At the end of the dance, bow to your partner.
